Summer Double Header

Crowd

MLB All-Star Game & Comic-Con Take Over in July

It’s not unusual to see tourists fill the streets (and beaches!) of San Diego each summer, but this July, it’s a double header for the MTS team with two major events coming to Downtown San Diego. First, baseball fans from across the nation will fill seats at Petco Park for MLB All-Star Week July 10 – 12. Then, Storm Troopers and Jedis will unite under one roof for Comic-Con July 21 – 24.

With thousands of out-of-towners looking to soak up San Diego, our Trolley team will kick into high gear to move people to and from the downtown area with ease. Just how big a job is it? During last year’s Comic-Con, we carried an estimated 281,000 passengers above normal daily ridership levels, and special event trains operated an extra 42,180 miles over the 5 day event.

For both All-Star Week and Comic-Con, Trolley service will operate on at least a 15 minute frequency (up to 7.5 minutes on select lines during peak event hours), and will run last train service after midnight, and as late as 1 a.m.

When asked about unique challenges to operating service with such large crowds, Tom Doogan, MTS Special Event Coordinator, is quick to discuss safety. “Not only are we moving tens of thousands additional people each day, there are even more people crossing our tracks at locations near the Convention Center and Gaslamp Quarter,” said Doogan. Riders are reminded to stay alert to crossing signals, stand behind the yellow safety line at stations, and most importantly, follow the instructions of Trolley special event and security staff.

“These events are an exercise in teamwork,” said Doogan. “I’m proud and amazed each year at the effort and the results our team produces.”
