Riding the Comeback Train (Or Trolley): Ridership Passes 81 Million

MTS Bus at SDSU Campus

Another year of ridership behind us, and transit use in San Diego continues to rise year after year. Fiscal year 2025 (July 2024 – June 2025) saw an overall rise of 7%, which pulled us past the 81 million passenger rides mark, (specifically 81,181,071 rides)! For reference, MTS ridership pre-pandemic (back in 2019) was 85.3 million rides. We’re now at 95% of pre-pandemic levels, an incredible mark!

Ridership Chart

Trolley ridership climbed about 7.5%, with the biggest percentage increase coming from the Green Line, which saw extra nighttime and weekend service added this year, and a ton of event ridership to Petco Park and Snapdragon Stadium, too.

Bus ridership also got a 7% boost. We had 11 routes that passed the million rides milestone this year, up from only eight routes that met this achievement last year.

We appreciate every single person who chooses transit: whether it’s the commuter heading to work, the student riding to class, or the neighbor using the Trolley to get to a doctor’s appointment or pick up groceries. Each rider plays a vital role in keeping our region moving, supporting a healthier environment, and building a more connected San Diego. Your trips add up to something much bigger: less traffic, cleaner air, and stronger, more sustainable communities. Thank you for being part of the MTS journey and making a difference.

As we see ridership increase once again, MTS is also coming to a crossroads. In a few years, we face a funding shortage that threatens the future health and growth of our transit system.
