Once upon a time, Coronado (as we now know it) was purchased for a whopping $110,000. In 1885, businessmen Elisha Babock Jr. and Hampton Story purchased the Coronado Peninsula with hopes of establishing “the grandest hotel on the Pacific Coast.” Two years later, the Hotel Del groundbreaking occurred. Now, 132 years after its initial purchase, Coronado is a favorite destination for residents and visitors alike.
Every summer, the city of Coronado sponsors free rides and extended service on Route 904! Starting May 27, Route 904 serves as Coronado’s “Free Summer Shuttle,” with 15-minute frequency daily, and extended weekend service until after 10 p.m.
Here are a few must-visit places along Route 904:
- Coronado Summer Concert in the Park: Does it get much better than live music on a warm summer night? Did we mention free? Now through September 3, enjoy weekly shows at Spreckels Park. See the concert schedule at coronadoconcert.com.
- Moo Time Creamery: Look for the large cow and Elvis statue to direct you to handcrafted ice cream in freshly-made waffle cones. (1025 Orange Avenue)
- Bay Books: Bay Books is the largest general independent bookstore in San Diego County, offering a wide array of titles from an expansive military history selection to young adult novels, indie favorites and a Kids Corner. (1029 Orange Avenue)
- Hotel Del Coronado: While you’re on the ‘island,’ don’t forget to see the show-stopping hotel that started it all 130+ years ago! (1500 Orange Avenue)
