On Sunday, April 17, Balboa Park will play host to the 27th Annual EarthFair. It’s anticipated that more than 50,000 San Diegans will flock to the world’s largest free environmental fair and Earth Day celebration.
Here at MTS, we help create a greener earth in our day-to-day operations. Check out some of the ways we’re committed to better air quality:
Biogas. MTS is the first transit agency in California to use biogas, which is extracted from a renewable source (like agriculture waste) so it’s a “greener” type of gas than both diesel and natural gas.
Solar Power. In 2015, MTS signed a contract to purchase and install 600 brand new bus shelters with environmentally-friendly solar power and LED lighting.
LEED. Our South Bay Bus Operations and Maintenance Facility and soon-to-be completed East County Bus Maintenance and Operations Facility are built to California Green Building Code and LEED silver certification.
CNG Buses. If you read the last edition of MTS Express, you know we’ve overturned much of our bus fleet to replace diesel vehicles with newer CNG buses. By the middle of this year, almost 95% of our fixed-route buses will be CNG.
ECO Pass. MTS partners with local employers including UC San Diego, Scripps, The City of San Diego, Downtown Partnership and many more to encourage employee transit use at a discounted cost. The program has seen a 36% increase since 2011.
Plus, when you choose to ride public transportation, you’re also making a big environmental impact!
One San Diego resident with a 20-mile round-trip commute who takes public transit over driving a personal vehicle can reduce his/her carbon emissions by more than 4,800 pounds a year.
