On April 17 we introduced the long-awaited 5001 Trolley cars to the world! If you missed the open house, that’s ok. You can check out the video embedded below to see it yourself!
The 5000 vehicles are the third generation of the modern, low-floor Trolley cars used on MTS lines since their introduction in 2005. In 2016, the board authorized a purchase of 45 new Trolley cars to cover expanded service needs and the Mid-Coast Trolley extension, and the first of those cars arrived in August 2018. The remainder of the cars will arrive as they are built over the next two years.
So what’s so special about the 5000 cars? The new seating arrangements! A completely redesigned middle section of the cars creates better passenger flow and offers more space for riders with mobility aids and strollers. The new cars also have vinyl seats instead of the cloth used in the 3000 and 4000 cars. And lastly – they’re California-built! The Seimens rail manufacturing hub in Sacramento has built 244 (and counting!) of our iconic red trolleys and we’re excited to add even more to our fleet.
