Teach your pre-school through high school students the value of public transportation while seeing some of San Diego's premier destinations!
Option 1: Classroom Pass at Discounted Rates (Group Pass, all students/chaperones travel together)
Fare Type |
Price per Person |
---|---|
MTS and NCTD regularly scheduled routes (bus/Trolley/SPRINTER) | $1.50 |
COASTER | $5.00 |
Coronado/San Diego Bay Ferry | $3.50 One-Way / $7.00 Round-Trip |
Option 2: PRONTO Youth Opportunity Pass
MTS is participating in a pilot program until June 2026 that allows all riders 18 and under free rides with a Youth PRONTO card or app. PRONTO is the fare system for MTS and NCTD. The Youth PRONTO card or app does not work Ferry Trips. Students who have a Youth PRONTO card or app can ride for free and teachers will not need to purchase extra passes for these eligible students as part of the Classroom Day Pass program to ride MTS/NCTD services. Teachers will still need to purchase passes for chaperones (unless they already have a valid PRONTO Adult fare) and students who do not have the card or app. More information on how students can obtain the Youth PRONTO card or app can be found on the Youth Opportunity Pass pilot program webpage. This can be a good option for parents to obtain free transit passes for their children for the field trip and beyond!
Policies and Guidelines
- The day pass rate is only available for groups of 12 or more students.
- We require one chaperone per five students. Chaperones must be at least 19 years old.
- Reservations must be made at least 10 business days in advance. Trips with NCTD or in May and June may require more advanced notice.
- Larger groups may placed on more than one bus or Trolley. The COASTER and the Ferry can only accommodate groups up to 135. Some NCTD routes cannot accommodate large groups.
- Trips on NCTD modes during peak commuter hours are subject to denial.
- Seating is first-come, first-served. You may be required to stand for part or all of your trip.
- Program is designed for teachers and students up to age 18 (pre-school to high school).
- At time of trip request, it must be specified how many students total will travel, and how many of them will travel with their own Youth PRONTO card (and therefore not be charged the fare other than Ferry)
