Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Enthusiasts Can Win Big on Raceday by Taking Transit

San Diego – The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon is back! With 20,000+ runners and 100,000 spectators expected Sunday, June 2, MTS is encouraging attendees to take the Trolley to avoid traffic and parking challenges along the racecourse.

Spectators can access the race start and finish lines on all three Trolley Lines. Those traveling from East County communities on the Orange Line or from South Bay communities on the UC San Diego Blue Line can travel to downtown stations like Fifth Avenue, Civic Center, and Courthouse. Those traveling from East County on the Green Line or from University City on the UC San Diego Blue Line should use the County Center/Little Italy station which is a 1.6-mile walk to the start line, and at the doorstep to the finish line.

MTS bus routes will experience major detours and service delays due to numerous road closures in the Downtown, Uptown (Hillcrest, Bankers Hill, University Heights), North Park, Normal Heights, Morena, Linda Vista, Bay Park and Mission Valley communities. To see the full list of detoured bus routes, please visit the MTS Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon webpage. MTS Information and Trip Planning assistance will be available from 7 a.m.–7 p.m. at (619) 233-3004.

Fans can avoid significant traffic congestion and high race day parking costs around downtown by using MTS’ free park & ride lots throughout the Trolley system. View the full list of Park & Ride lots on the MTS website. The most convenient locations for race day are:

  • Old Town Transit Center (Blue and Green Line, 400+ free parking spots)
  • Grossmont Transit Center (Green and Orange Line, 220 free parking spots)
  • El Cajon Transit Center (Green and Orange Line, 400+ free parking spots)
  • Amaya Drive (Green and Orange Line, 236 free parking spots)

To help expedite the boarding process, fans should download the PRONTO app in advance. Load at least $5 on your virtual card, which covers a round-trip fare for adult riders. Each passenger with a valid fare must tap or scan on the station validators prior to boarding. Every passenger needs their own PRONTO app or card, you cannot buy fares for multiple people on the same device. If you have a PRONTO card, you can load your card in advance online at ridepronto.com.

Kids ride free! Families going to the games can save big by taking MTS. On weekends, two children 12 and under ride for free, no pass required, with every paying adult.
